The Shadow Index (“The Shadow Index,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) values your privacy. This Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you visit theshadowindex.com, receive our communications, contact us, or otherwise interact with our content and services (collectively, the “Site”).

1. Scope and third-party services

This Policy applies to the Site and information we process through it. It does not govern a third-party website, source archive, advertiser, affiliate merchant, social network, or other service linked from the Site. Those services operate under their own privacy practices, and we encourage you to review them before providing information or completing a transaction.

2. Information we may collect

Information you provide

We may collect your name, email address, inquiry topic, message content, communication preferences, survey or promotion responses, and content you choose to submit, such as source links, corrections, comments, photographs, documents, or feedback.

Information collected automatically

When you use the Site, we and our service providers may automatically collect device and usage information, including IP address, browser and device type, operating system, approximate location, referring and exit pages, pages viewed, links clicked, timestamps, and interactions with emails or advertisements. We may use cookies, pixels, web beacons, JavaScript, local storage, and similar technologies for these purposes.

Information from third parties

We may receive information from hosting, analytics, security, email, advertising, affiliate, social media, data, and promotional partners. This information may be combined with information collected directly from you or through the Site.

Children

The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have done so, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

3. How we use information

We may use information to operate and secure the Site; respond to inquiries, source submissions, corrections, and privacy requests; process communication preferences and unsubscribe requests; personalize content; analyze usage and improve features; administer comments, surveys, or promotions; send editorial or promotional communications; measure advertising and affiliate performance; prevent fraud and abuse; comply with law; enforce our agreements; and carry out other purposes disclosed when information is collected or with your consent.

4. How we may disclose information

We may disclose information to service providers that support hosting, databases, analytics, security, email delivery, advertising, affiliate tracking, and other business operations; to affiliates and business partners; to advertisers and affiliate networks; to a buyer or successor in a merger, financing, reorganization, or sale; when required by law or legal process; to protect rights, safety, and security; and with your direction or consent.

We may disclose aggregated or de-identified information that cannot reasonably identify you without restriction. Depending on applicable law and the technologies used, certain advertising or affiliate disclosures may be considered a “sale,” “sharing,” or use for targeted advertising even when no money is exchanged.

5. Advertising, analytics, and affiliate marketing

The Site may display advertisements, include affiliate links, and recommend third-party books, films, products, archives, or services. If you click an affiliate link or complete a qualifying action, we may receive a commission. Advertising, analytics, and affiliate partners may use cookies, pixels, or similar technologies to recognize your browser or device, measure interactions, attribute purchases, build audiences, or deliver interest-based advertising.

Third parties control their own technologies and data practices. Their collection and use of information are governed by their respective privacy policies.

6. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies may help remember preferences, keep features working, understand Site traffic, measure campaigns, and personalize content or advertising. Some cookies expire when you close your browser; others remain until they expire or are deleted. You can usually control cookies through your browser settings, though disabling them may affect Site functionality.

7. Your choices

You may choose not to provide optional information. You may unsubscribe from promotional email through our Unsubscribe page, a link in the message, or by contacting us. We intend to honor applicable requirements of the CAN-SPAM Act and related laws. Transactional or service messages may still be sent when necessary.

You may adjust browser cookie settings and, where available, use industry opt-out tools or legally recognized browser signals. To request access, correction, deletion, or an opt-out from sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or third-party marketing, use our Contact Us page and select “Privacy or legal request.”

8. U.S. state privacy rights

Residents of California and certain other states may have rights to know or access the personal information we collect, obtain details about sources and disclosures, correct inaccurate information, request deletion, obtain a portable copy, and opt out of certain sales, sharing, targeted advertising, or profiling. You may also have the right not to receive discriminatory treatment for exercising these rights.

We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. Authorized agents may submit requests where permitted by law, subject to verification of their authority. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law and explain if an exception applies. You may appeal a denied request where state law provides that right.

9. Data retention and security

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including legal, accounting, security, and dispute-resolution needs. We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure.

10. International visitors

The Site is operated in the United States. If you access it from another country, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your location.

11. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. The revised version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. Your continued use of the Site after an update means the revised Policy applies to your future use.
